What is PEI Active?
PEI Active is a movement that encourages all Canadians to become more physically active! Become one of the people from all the country who have found exciting ways to make physical activity an important part of their day. Getting more physically active can change your life. You'll have more energy, tire less easily, and be more relaxed.
The movement begins today, and it begins with you! Lead by example: If you're a parent, a teacher, a friend, an employer, or a health care provider – get active and others will follow. Encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle - a lifestyle that will help communities and young people to achieve their full potential.
What is Active Living?
“Active living is a way of life in which physical activity is valued and integrated into daily life. It is individual, social and inclusive. It is a holistic approach to fitness where the nature, form, frequency and intensity of the physical activity is determined by each individual according to his or her ability, needs, aspirations and environment” (adapted from ALACD - Government of Canada: Fitness and Amateur Sport. Active Living – A Conceptual Overview, 1993, p.8.)
What is Physical Activity?
Physical activity is any action that moves the body and requires energy to do so. For the best results it is important to combine three types of physical activity and to encourage children to participate in a variety of activities:
Endurance: Continuous movement that benefits the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Endurance activities (aerobic exercise) make you breathe deeper, your heart beat faster and make you sweat.
Flexibility: Involves stretching, reaching, bending. They keep the muscles relaxed and joints mobile.
Strength: Involves use of the muscle against some form of resistance. They strengthen muscles, bones and improve posture
